🧠 The Best Things Money Can Buy

Friends,

In 2004, two professors -- Ed Diener and Martin Seligman -- asked thousands of people a simple question: “Are are you satisfied with your life?”

Unsurprisingly, those on Forbes Richest Americans scored very well. But they weren’t alone. Three surprising groups joined them at the top of the list:

  • The Pennsylvania Amish
  • The African Maasai tribespeople
  • The Inghuit of Northern Greenland

The results perplexed many. How could some of the poorest people on the planet be as satisfied with their lives as the richest?

Further research uncovered a handful of common traits allowed the Amish, Maasai, and Inghuit to score so well: a faith in a higher power, autonomy in how they spent their time, and strong social connections.

That's it.

The takeaway is simple: Wealth and possessions don't automatically lead to the good life. Freedom and strong relationships with others do.

The three of us love investing and watching our net worths go up. However, we also know that pursuing money simply for money's sake doesn't always turn out well. History is littered with examples of rich and powerful people that lead miserable daily lives.

We've come to believe that the best things money can buy are:

  • Freedom to explore your beliefs
  • Freedom to choose how to spend your time
  • Freedom to prioritize RELATIONSHIPS over STUFF

Focus your time and energy on those and you'll dramatically increase your odds of flourishing.

One Piece of Timeless Content:

Innovation is alive and well, but you'd never know it if you only watched the news. That's why I love reading through Time magazines list of 100 best inventions of the year. 2021's list contained gems like a home COVID-19 test, an unbreakable baby bottle, and software that enables multilingual meetings. Lists like this always help me feel better whenever I'm feel uneasy about humanity.

One Twitter Thread:

Nathan Barry, the founder of ConvertKit, often uses Twitter to share wonderful insights for creators and entrepreneurs. This thread on pricing is a wonderful read on how to capitalize on consumer behavior:
